Studio 6
Under the guidance of graphic designer Jeremiah Chu, select seniors of the communication arts department at OTIS College of Art and Design were tasked with the creation of a full identity system with deliverables for the 2022 senior show. Being on the seniors on board with the creation of this identity, it was both exciting and daunting. Collaboration had been a point of emphasis in the graphic design program but I had not been on a team of 16 graphic designers and illustrators before. It was clear by week four that the entire team had vastly contrasting ideas of what the show could be, which was healthy in the iteration process. However, by week 10 it was clear that these differences would prove to interfere with progress. Then realization struck, we each had a vastly different process and way we viewed design, but we wanted to use this to our advantage. Each member of the team looked to locate and take a picture of various letters in signage and posters unique to the 6th floor where the communication arts department was located. Choosing the most interesting one to us personally, we altered the original photos and created an alphabet. This would serve as the foundation of the identity system for the senior show, showing that the communication arts department comprises vastly different designers unified by the sixth floor and our bonds as friends. After this revelation, all the pieces fell into place. Volunteering for the catalog team, it was our responsibility to gather photos and descriptions of the senior projects as well as creating a grid system to organize it all. This is the culmination of the senior show design team’s work.
